Winter :p

Things I've learned from this snow storm.....
For one, I ♥ Summer, Spring, and Fall. Water freezes almost the second you set it outside :/ Cookie tin water heaters for chickens is the best thing the hubs has ever made for me and they work great! Milking a goat in the cold sucks for you and the goat, so I started the process of drying my doe up. My family is used to the taste of raw goats milk now and store bought cows milk tastes like a public swimming pool LOL!!! I will miss her milk, but am now on a mission to find a milk source close by. I also realized that even though I'm a homebody, I have cabin fever. I haven't left my house in about four days. You can hunt at night if it has snowed. We got a fox last night and it was fun to get out of the house and sit in the heated blind with the hubs watching nature tv :) Pictionary is a really fun game to play with the family and I am horrible with Geography LOL!!!! My chickens have all shacked up in different coops. I guess the chicken rules fly out the window when it's cold. I have anxiety daily about the well being of my critters. I have spent more time outside than I would like. Did I mention my dislike of Winter? Tom Turkeys are dumb. The hubs has to climb on top of the snow covered shed to get his crazy, suicidal butt down every night. Hey Tom, it's sleeting and like -5 wind chill you idiot! My little Yorkie, Wee dog, loves the snow, loves to sled, and loves being outside with my little one. Frozen chicken poop is impossible to scrape up, so the coops won't be cleaned until the poop thaws. Last but not least I HATE WINTER but I'm very thankful that we have power and so far we are ALL still alive and well!!!!! Stay warm and safe ya'll. Hopefully I will get out of this house soon☺

  1. We have had freezing rain and then sleet but it isn't bad out as the wind isn't blowing. So far the internet was all that went out for awhile. The animal water isn't even frozen today. We still have two weeks until winter starts, how about that!

  2. So many people say winters are slow and there isn't anything to do during them. (Methinks these people all live in condos with a maintenance crew that shovels their sidewalks.) Winter time on the homestead, I think, is very busy with all the "extras" that need to be done to make sure we humans, animals, equipment and vehicles stay healthy and operational! No matter how well set-up we think we are, each year during the winter we encounter something that causes us time, trouble and may even be unsafe. Will we ever get it all under control? (Not if Mother Nature has anything to say about it.) Hang in there!

    1. I've about decided there is no down time in homesteading. All seasons are busy :/
I made your cauliflower cheese soup today, but with broccoli. It's always so good, I cherish this recipe :)

  3. I also hate winter...and yes, turkeys are not the brightest of God's creatures...LOL...We were able to get ours coaxd into the hen house and locked in during this mess...ours(hens, turkeys & goats) were locked in for 3 days...today is the first day they saw outside...Normally our turkeys roost way up in the trees or on top of the hen house...hopefully we are to the point of thawing out and maybe, just maybe we won't get any more of this mess.....a girl can hope can't she...LOL...Take care and stay warm!

  4. Stay warm and toasty my friend. Hangin out with the husband in the blind sounds exciting...awww togetherness.. Can't beat it.
Its been in the 80s here. But finally suppose to turn cold.
Winter time of the homestead is even busier then summer...you have to pay more attention to your critters and make sure they are cared for and not freezing. Think of how many heads of cattle may be lost do to this weather.. city folk just don't get it.

    1. You would think it was romantic and fun but he takes his hunting serious and I needed to pee after about an hour and wanted some chap stick so he was ready for me to go in lol!!!
I'm so glad I didn't lose anyone this round. I try so hard to keep all my critters comfy and fed and no city folk don't get it!!!

    1. I should be taking advantage of this time to get my house clean but with kids sledding and everyone tracking in snow and dirt, its pointless. I hope we both get freed soon. I usually love staying home, I think the fact that I HAVE TO is what's bugging me lol!!!

  7. Public swimming pool....LOL!!!! I agree. We don't really care for raw cow milk as much as the goat milk either.

I agree- winter sucks. It's not frozen down here, but it's a giant mud pit. And I imagine frozen chicken poo doesn't smell as bad as my pig pen these days! I almost wish it were frozen.

    1. I bought Wal-Mart milk, yuck!!!!!! I will miss Lady's milk for sure but she will be back in the swing of things in four months :)
The chicken poo thawed out a little today so I could clean up a bit but it's going to be a mess :/ I can't imagine pig poo, although I would love to have a couple pigs :)

  8. Makes you wonder how turkeys survived as a species, doesn't it? I finally clipped Larry's wing feathers, so he can't get far. He still tries...winter is a trial, but it makes us love spring even more!
