Names

Not too long ago, a fellow blogger had posted about how no matter what you call yourself we are all like minded and are striving for similar goals. His post made me think about what I am striving for and what would I call myself. Farmer, homesteader, prepper, ect. I am a homesteader! My goal is to have gardens that feed my family, goats that make cheese, milk, and babies, & chickens that provide eggs and meat. In the future I want all of my animals to sustain themselves in some way. Like trading eggs with my neighbor for grass fed beef or selling goat kids and goats milk soap to help with feed costs. I'm not there yet but I WILL BE! Until then I am enjoying my animals, I love picking flowers and vegetables from my garden for my table & watching my youngest daughter play with baby chicks after school, and  giving my family and friends homemade gifts whenever I can. So what name would you give yourself?

  1. Hi Kelly, I guess that I am a caregiver, and always have been. I show my love to others my doing my best to be there for them in one way or another. Sometimes that is a helping hand, sometimes a gift, and sometime just in prayer. I hate to say "just" when it comes to prayer, because I believe that it is the number one gift that we can give and receive.
Hope that your day is going along smoothy and is filled with happy moments. Connie :)

  2. Wow, not sure what I call myself, we are sort of doing what you are doing only we tried goats and got away from that experiment. I kind of associate myself with my ancestors who were living on the frontier of Virginia in the 1750s. They survived so much over the last 250 years, maybe we are survivors?

    1. WOW! I Love your answer!!!! Just curious as to why you got away goats? We are new to them and haven't dealt with breeding, birth, and milking. I am a little nervous about all of it, half of the things I hear about goats aren't very positive. Have a great day SBF!!!

    2. We had goats to help keep down the weeds as when we moved to my wifes family farm, there was about 3 acres to mow which was a grand waste of time and money. The goats were mixed breeds and wanted to eat everything but what we needed eaten and they would go through any fencing and eventually break all ways of staking them out. The short story was that they constantly worked against what I was doing and destroyed trees, chicken feed, what ever wasn't a weed so we parted company. I liked the females as they were like dogs and were fun to watch. A billy goat can be found in the dark by smell alone, nasty creatures. We didn't milk them, maybe that would have made it worthwhile. Now we use calves and a horse and I cut weeds with a scythe, seems to work so far.

    3. The fencing is what I'm afraid of. They are still small so no escapes yet. We got our boy first and bottle fed him but I like the girl better! Our boy has started drinking his pee and hers, so he's on the right track for being nasty :p Thanks for your story, we don't know what to expect so I really appreciate it ☺

  3. Kelly, I don't have a FARM, no cows, horses, chickens, goats, etc. but I have 6 acres for 15 yrs and wanted this type of life. But sometimes that's not where life goes...so my dream back then has brought me to where I am now...I'm 54, don't want to start that now at this point in my life..always wanted chickens, cows, and a donkey! I do have a vegetable garden and I love natural, organic things and mostly the SIMPLE PLEASURES in LIFE!! (even tho I know farm life is WORK!!) I guess I could say..I'm Roxie...plain and simple, I LOVE people, CHRIST JESUS, and I want to be whatever and where ever he leads me! From one sweetie to another~~~~Roxie

    1. Roxie is a perfect name!!! You should get a few laying hens! They are easy to take care of, fun to watch and you won't have to buy eggs. I also bet your coop would be extraordinary!!!! Have a beautiful day ☺

  4. I'd have to say I'm a hobby homesteader and fledgling gardener at this point, but you never know! In a couple years' time, I might be more than that. (I might be able to take the word 'hobby' out of there!)

    1. Building a "homestead" from nothing takes alot of time and hard work! Homesteaders aren't good at just one thing they have to know everything about everything!!! I hope your future is everything you want it ot be and more!
