I did it!!!

First an update on the dog drama. Monday morning me and the little one were running late for school and at the corner of our street we met our neighbor coming back home. He waved and I honestly didn't see it. I was concentrating on getting the tardy wee one to school but I asked my daughter did he wave (we do that around here) and she said yes. I was glad I missed it and didn't return the wave. I wanted him to know I'm not happy. Five o'clock comes and we are finally getting back from Wal-Mart (hate that place) and he pulls in the drive. He was very apologetic and sorry. I explained to him that we had a postitive id that it was his dog and that all of this really stressed and bummed me out. He asked if he could replace my birds, I said no. I'm just going to keep them penned up. He asked if we would like a free jump rental sometime and I said okay that works. So although I'm sad we lost our birds, one day in the future my kids are going to have a fun day on a big inflatable something for free :) I'm also relieved and shocked that my other neighbor who had lost chickens to the dog (the one that didn't give me the heads up) never even told him and he talks to her almost every day. I had only assumed he knew his demon dog was doing that and hadn't done anything about it. Glad I was wrong. He also told me we have mountain lions around here. I said I know I saw one, he said no like cougars, I said I know I saw one. I still don't think he believed me, lol!

So the chickens have been penned up since Friday afternoon. I have mentioned before I have way too many roosters and being all penned up the girls don't have a chance. So last night I gathered up three big ugly boys and put them in a cage and this morning.........drumroll please..................I butchered them from start to finish all by myself!!!!! I was nervous as hell, I cried a little, and I shook a lot but I got through the first one fine, the second one fine, and then the third one. He must have known what was up because he bit me right away. The first two deaths were humane, quick, and drama free. The third one would have to be in it's own category of CRAZY!!! But it's done they are in the fridge and I'm super proud of myself :) I still need to butcher about three more but I will wait until next week.

I planted some veggies yesterday and got my seed potatoes. It felt good to be in the dirt again. I will take pictures as soon as I get that area cleaned up. My chickens have scratched all the straw, dirt, leaves, and rocks everywhere. It's a disaster....

It's a beautiful day, 85* I'm headed back outside :)))))

    1. Thanks! I had done every part of the process except the killing so I just wanted to do it all. I prayed the whole time, there was tears, and a lot of gratitude. I don't feel very brave, lol!!!!!

  2. Is neighbor going to pen up the dog? The first time I saw the dogs that killed 5 of my chickens and 2 turkeys, I made him pay for them. If you don't hit them in the pocketbook, most think it is OK until next time. I hope you don't have a next time. I haven't seen the guilty neighbors dogs since. He built a fence for them and got rid of all the puppies that were trashing the neighborhoods garbage cans.

Good job on the roosters! If I wasn't so tired I would be butchering a goat and another one better be glad she's pregnant. What a day!

    1. Yes he penned the dog. Once my fury subsided I didn't want to kill his dog or make him pay. I just wanted my happy back!
Glad your neighbors took care of their dogs. The lady I chewed out Thursday has two new giant puppies!!!!!! They were just trampling through my just planted garden! I swear people need to control their animals!!!!!!
Sorry about your day, it's making me giggle, I can just imagine the goat shenanigans LOL!!!

  3. Wow, you're not only into spring time but SUMMER time.

Glad to hear the chicken-killing dog situation is a bit better, at least. But, geesh, what's with the (bad) neighbor and letting her new puppies run loose?!

Kudos to you for doing the rooster butchering by yourself. I've never done it myself so give you a lot of credit for jumping into it on your own!

    1. I know! I was sweating this afternoon and then 40 mile an hour wind gusts came. It will be 36 by morning with a high of 53 :p

I think that neighbor on the hill is missing a few bricks upstairs if you know what I mean ;) After my chat with her she won't walk all the way down the hill. She sends her three dogs and kid to meet the bus. I wasn't that rude.....

Thanks I am so proud. It was hard and I don't want to do it again anytime soon. I'm just glad that I can do it, if I have to :)

  5. Glad things have worked themselves out. I'm also very proud of you for butchering the roosters yourself!!! They should be mighty tasty on the grill, or rooster-n-dumplings ;-)

    1. Thanks K The killing was the hardest part :( The rest I had done several times before. This time I did skip the plucking and just skinned them so I need to learn the best way to roast a whole skinless bird :)

Congrats on the rooster butcher! You go girl! It does get easier the more you do. I felt like I needed a drink after I did in my first one...and it was only noon on a Sunday.

  9. Hi Kelly,
Wow! You have fully graduated into a 100% farm girl. Just reading your blog, I have watched you grow tougher and braver . . . a girl that is on top of her game. I'm so proud of you :)
You have been on my mind a lot lately . . . with Easter just around the corner i've been thinking Kelly and baby chicks :)
    Keep smiling,
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

  10. in the words of Ruby from "Cold Mountain": " I despise a floggin rooster, (snap goes the neck) Let;s put em in a pot" !.. lol

At least the dog owner is giving you something in return--those inflatable rentals are in the hundreds of $$$. But on the other hand you can't eat the inflatable, and the inflatable does not lay eggs. So....
