Snow???

Isn't it crazy how the weather can energize us! During our week of flu sickness, I still managed to get outside for two 60 degree days and finish the barn painting project I had started the day I got sick! Pictures of that to come soon. It looks amazing! Today with the threat of cold rain turning to snow, my usual coop cleaning chores are already done and it's only 10am! I plan on making white chili tonight! I have never tried it before. I think it will be a nice change. It has chicken instead of beef and great northern beans instead of the ranch style beans I normally use. Chili with a little cornbread, chores done, and a warm (but dirty)house. Bring on the snow, I'm ready ☺ The latest chicken news, today I quit turning some of the eggs in the bator, they are due to hatch Friday ☺ My two pullets that hatched early September are laying now! One of my little cochins layed an egg last night and it was the cutest thing, barely bigger than a quarter. It reminded me of Ms. Squirty's first egg, she made quite the fuss that evening and I was so worried about her, around 9pm I came in with the cutest pink egg, I think I even cried LOL! I miss her so much but I have 10 of her offspring and a few of them have her spunky attitude ☺ Stay warm and safe!!!
This was Ms. Angelsquirt's egg from last year :) I can't seem to upload pictures from my camera today, but her sweet daughters egg looks about the same maybe smaller and not as pink. They make great deviled eggs!

  1. Glad to see you feeling better! Congrats on the eggs! We've got 'bators and brooders full, was hoping to get some of the older chicks moved outside but it'll have to wait with this cold snap headed our way.

I love white chili it's always nice for a change!

    1. Thanks, we are all feeling better! Not 100% but not horrible anymore! My husband is not looking forward to baby chicks in the shop again. He'll have to get over it though LOL!
I can't wait to try this chili, it sounds so good ☺

  2. I have a question for those that incubate eggs...Is there an advantage to using an incubater vs. doing it the natural way under a hen...typically I have around 20 chicks hatched out each year by a few hens...I let the mama raise them and have always had good outcome...so what is better about incubating and raising them yourself? Just curious.

    1. I wouldn't know the answer to that. I haven't had any hatch naturally with their mother yet. The only chicken I ever had that went broody was my cochin Squirty and we didn't have roosters for awhile. Then when she finally started laying fertile eggs I had some saved for her to sit on and she got killed by a fox or coyote. So I ended up putting them in the incubator. I'm hoping some of those little cochins raise their own babies this spring ☺

    2. I forgot to mention that the bunch of eggs that are due Friday I had put in to raise as meat birds, so that's one reason to incubate you can hatch out some chicks whenever you want and your not paying the hatchery or feed store for chickens! The second batch are due to hatch in 2 weeks and they are the Maran eggs I got from Kristin. I am hatching these to add the pretty dark brown egg color to my flock ☺

    3. I have found that the mortality rate of hen raised chicks is really high. Chicks don't do well when free ranging...but if you can put them and mama in a small pen they do well. I collect eggs and incubate them when I am needing replacement layers. Otherwise, I let the mamas hatch and raise them. As for the other birds, I collect and incubate so that I get more hatched per year. Picking up their egg every day will keep them laying much longer than if they stop laying to brood a batch (which is why I incubate all the turkey, duck, and quail). Does that make sense?

    4. I was just curious and thought maybe there was some big advantage I was missing...LOL...we do keep our hens and chicks penned when they hatch...I have lost some over the years but not a whole lot...I guess it's one of things that "whatever works best for your situation" is what ya gotta do...Thanks ladies for the answers..very insightful! Have a blessed day!

  3. I like the little eggs just to cook for myself, nobody wants to buy them but I don't see what the big difference is if you are going to eat a couple. Sunny and warm this afternoon.

    2. We have your rain now, just found a country store that had stayman apples at $12 a bushel so I got one. They feel solid but I will make apple sauce or something if they start acting weird.
