Tomatoes

After carefully planting my tomatoe plants and wrapping the base with aluminum foil (like grandpa said to do). I still came out to see one of my plants bent over from a cutworm :( I guess I didn't put the foil high enough out of the soil. The plant didn't die so I have layed it over put more foil on it, mounded it up with dirt and am hoping it will take root. I have put more foil around all my plants so they have ample amount of protection from those little buggers!  Looking forward to some homegrown heirloom tomatoes YUM!!!

  1. EEEE. Hope the cutworms don't come back and get more of your tomatoes.
They look good though. Really big!

    1. Thanks! The foil seems to work as long as you have some below ground and above LOL! I have a feeling this years garden is going to be a battle of the bugs!!!

  3. Nice tomato plants. I hope your foil is a success. Our main garden problem is deer. They always know just when the veggies are ready, it seems!

    1. Thank you! I hope it works too! We have deer but they stay in the back, back. Do you fence your garden to keep them out?

  4. This will be the first year that I plant tomatoes and I've never even heard of cutworms! What zone do you live in? (I'm curious, because I want to know if they're common everywhere, as in: do I have them up here?)

If they are common in Northern Maine, I'll be happy to know a way of reducing their capabilities and impact!

    1. We are zone 6. I am not sure if they are everywhere, but I would protect them just to be on the safe side. You can put dixie cups, toilet paper rolls, aluminum foil or anything around the stem, half in the ground and half out that should protect the plant and the foil just falls off when the plant gets so big, at that point the plant will be too thick for them to curl up around and cut. This year was the first time they got one of my plants, I guess it didn't cut all the way through so I was able to save it ☺
