Chick update update

I brought the chicks in. I watched her all day and she was kicking them and stepping on them. One of the problems is that shes a normal size hen and the eggs she stole and sat on are bantams. They are soo tiny and she is just too big. They seem to be doing alright, with the exception of one who looks like it has a chromosone missing like one of the chickens I hatched out not to long ago. I think it was the last one to hatch so that just goes to show you that incubating or all natural a late hatcher is not right  :( Mother hen has put herself back into the nest boxes where there will be more babies hatching soon. I just hope she doesn't repeat her behavior. Harvested my first ever asparagus MMmmmmm it was delish, sauteed in butter and garlic topped with parmesan cheese. I can't wait for the next batch to pop up.

  2. I LOVE chick pics! And that asparagus.....oh, I really need to get some planted one year. Last year I had my FIRST taste of FRESH, right-outta-the-ground, just cut from my own knife, asparagus. It was DE-vine! Enjoy yours! I'll just lick the screen and dream.

  3. The asparagus looks great, ours isn't near ready yet this year.

Sorry to hear about the chicks. I'm not sure what the mortality rate is for chickens but I'm sure it's high. It takes an older and more experienced hen to get them grown....but if you don't give them the chance then they don't get the experience, right?

    1. You are right....I am overprotective of all my animals. There is more to hatch naturally, I will provide them with food and water and just watch this time. To have one that looked like my Ms. Squirty made me over bearing and of course it was the first one dead :(

  4. Wow they are super cute, and congrats on your asperagus!! What variety do you have planted? It snowed here yesterday, so no asperagus for us yet. It does look delicious though!

    1. I don't remember what it was called. I planted them last year, jersey something or other maybe? I planted some more this year to fill in some empty spots. If I'm going to dedicate a whole raised bed, I want lots of asparagus ☺

  5. You do understand as soon as I find your asparagus bed(s) I'm gonna sneak about in my ninja pants and swipe your crop. I like my drizzled with olive oil, dusted with pepper and salt and over roasted. You lucky girl, you....

  6. Because this is a full-sized hen and the chicks are bantam do you think she might think there is something wrong with them because they're so small? A stretch in imagination, I know, but we've never had a hen kick and stomp on chicks.

The picture of your asparagus truly made me salivate. I LOVE fresh asparagus! A plateful with butter and salt and that's all I'd want for dinner. Or lunch. Or breakfast. Or a snack. Or . . .

    1. I'm thinking that moving her made her lose her mind for a minute. Once I moved her and the babies they had a ton of room and she decided to take a dust bath and then she paced back and forth for a minute and thats when she stepped on them :(
