Getting ready for chicks ☺

Most of the eggs the broodys are sitting on are bantams, so that means they could start hatching as early as tomorrow. The weather is warmer than it has been the last few days so I decided to tidy up the coop a bit. I crawled through the open air bottom area and popped my head up to the next level of nests. Oh my goodness! You would have thought a tiger crawled into the coop. The SCREAMING!!!! It was soo bad I actually started to wonder if something horrible was in the coop. I looked up, behind me, on the ground, to the sides. Nada, it was just me!!!! I got the platform in front of the nests swept up and doo doo free, cleaned all the ladders, added new straw to the bottom area, and placed food and water on the platforms next to the crazy ladies nests so they can stay put until the babies get a little bigger. I'm not as anxious as I am with incubating. I have confidence these girls will know what to do. I am excited to hear the little peeps from under the mamas. It will be so cute!!!!! I will post pics as soon as the first batch hatch. Have a great day ya'll!!!!

  1. There is nothing better than the noise of tiny chicks under mama hens. I've only had that experience once. :)

  2. I have a turkey hen sitting on 14 eggs! This is my first sitter and she's faithful. Last year one started sitting and then deserted the nest. Papa Bear brought in 17 eggs he found in another spot over a week ago. They have been in the incubator. I think 14 of them were good on the first check. You are going to have baby chicks everywhere and I will have turkeys!

    2. What is that saying?...Breed the best and eat the rest...bahahaha...I will try to sell some of mine to offset some of the feed bill. What I can't sell will eventually find their way into the canner or freezer.

I have a tom that flew over into the goat pen a few months ago. He thinks he is the baby goats protector. I haven't figured out if he likes me or stalks me while I am in the pen. I sure don't want that big boy to jump on me. I told him the other day I have a sharp axe, apple juice and a grill. I don't think he was concerned.

At least you are hatching big turkeys. Mine are all going to be bantams!!!! Not much meat there. I might start trying to sell some ☺

  3. I looked at chicks at tractor supply the other day but I am holding off as the price of feed is too high. I need to figure out a new source of feed somehow. They didn't buy laying pellets 200 years ago so I need to rethink things. Good luck on your babies!
