Spring Break Tradition and What Not To Do

Yesterday was the first day of Spring Break! When my oldest daughter was a toddler I got a baby pool and let her swim, even though it was too cold. I'm probally a bad mom for doing this but it's became tradition. When the outside temps are hot enough you want to be in the water, but the water is so cold it numbs whatever part of your body is in it. This is our teeth chattering, numb your buns off tradition. So this year, since my oldest is 16, I got a family size baby pool! We set it up yesterday I called it the Oasis, but it's more like a hillbilly vacation! We layed out, dipped into the pool and listened to the radio. Everyone has a sunburn, so we won't be hanging out at the Oasis today but we had a great time!

Now for what not to do. My last incubation of eggs went HORRIBLE. I cannot stress enough how important the temperature and humidity control is! I thought that we were done with the sadness from that hatch but we are not. One of my chicks that has been perfectly fine for the last two weeks has curled toes and can't walk now. This is from the low temps while incubating. We made it some shoes to straighten out it's toes but it's legs are too weak to even hold itself up, it's going to die. I'm hoping none of the other ones come down with this but I won't be suprised if they do. I only have one of the two black Silkies. One didn't last two days and the other has issues we are dealing with. I won't go into all the details but look chicks over REALLY well before you get them from a feed store! So that's my PSA's for today! Have a great weekend ya'll!!!

  1. Sorry to hear about your chicks. Thanks for sharing. It's all such a learning game for me.

That pool sounds divine. Don't forget the sunscreen next time!

  2. Those farm store chicks are just hatched in hatchers and incubators only a very large scale compared to home hatched but can still suffer the same problems you did and many others do when home hatching chicks...I did buy some this year and will order 1 more batch but this is my last year to do so...from here on out, we are doing it the way they did it 100 years ago...the old way...just seems hen mamas know best...But how tempting to hatch and/or buy them...to cute to resist at times!

  4. Kelly...Read this http://easylivingthehardway.blogspot.com/2013/03/new-ideas-on-raising-baby-chicks.html

I am going to start giving my feathered babies yogurt and goat milk. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Your spring break sounds like a whole heap of fun. I very seldom get a sunburn but I did a couple of weeks ago. I striped my sweatshirt off down to the tank undershirt I had on. I got a burn on my back and boy it was sore for a week and then about itched me to death!

  5. oh Kelly- sorry about the babies. Your the second person I follow from Okie-ville, and she was talking about Spring break this week too. Ours starts the week prior to Easter. When i was in school,Our Spring break did not happen until the week after Easter..it made Easter seem more like a Holiday back then.

  6. Hi Kelly, I loved your hillbilly vacation pool story. We have a 6 foot blue stock tank that we fill up in the summer. We have even cut a hole in the side and have a small swimming pool filter attached. We call it our red-neck hot tub, although it is cold water. We love it and in the summer after mowing the yard and pulling weeds , it sure feels good to soak in it. Steve and I sit in it together on summer nights and watch the stars. It is deep enough that when I sit the water is to my neck. Maybe I'll do a post on it this summer.
    No swimsuit shots, LOL.
Happy St. Patty's Day and thanks for the sweet comment you left on my art journal post.
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

  7. I know from experience how hard it is to keep the temperature and humidity correct this time of year. I have had similar problems to you. I think late spring is the best as the humidity and temperature are better even if the hen is setting.
