Just a little gripe!
Not too long ago two of my chickens go really hurt from dogs that were running wild. Now my neighbor who is a friendly aquaintence has a boxer pup that has grown to the size of a goat. His new favorite thing to do is come in my yard and chase my chickens! I have a bit of angina when I see this happen!!! I'm pretty sure my chickens do too! Noone really has fences around here but I make sure all of my animals dog, goats, bunnies and chickens stay in our yard and they do for the most part. My dog does like to roam sometimes but she's 10#'s and wouldn't hurt any other animals. Most people don't understand that it's NOT JUST A CHICKEN! It's my chicken that I have raised for 6 months and am anticipating her laying eggs, or that I had raised for six months and she just started laying. You chicken people know what I mean. I only have nine chickens and I care about each one of them and I have had them all for at least six months! The other day I told my other neighbor hey watch out for my chickens when you leave and he casually said "Oh I will buy you another one if I run it over" This is my gripe when you come get your pup, who is chasing my chickens out of MY yard and you laughingly say "sorry". It's not funny! Me and four of my hens are having heart attacks right now sir! Also if my other neighbor did run over my chicken, it's not just replacing the chicken it's the time, feed, and love I have for them. I don't think they will understand EVER, but I'm thinking real hard about a fence to keep these other critters OUT of my yard!

I'd casual mention that "I'd hate for your dog to get into some of the rat poison around my house, but oh well, I'll just buy you another one if that happens." I'm sure he'll be a better handle on his dog then.
ReplyDeleteHa, I love it! At the moment I was breathless from carrying my little dog and chasing their dog back out front! But next time, I'm saying just that!
DeleteOh I like K's response too! I'd have to use that one.
ReplyDeletePeople can be so numb sometimes. And you gotta do what you need to do to keep your farm animals safe.
Oklahoma law says that we can kill any cat or dog that chases or kills our livestock on our property. I wouldn't want to do that because I know the people the dog belongs to but it keeps getting out and comes straight to our backyard. They are renters, I hope they move soon ☺
DeleteI hate to admit it, but I keep a pellet gun on the front porch for the express purpose of plinking stray dogs that chase after the chickens / goats. In less than one week, we've had one stray (that finally left of his own accord, he was pretty nice though, but still) and just one this morning, although he had chewed through his tie out and he had tags so I took him to his owner who was very apologetic and grateful to get his dog back.
ReplyDeleteAnd your thoughts on fence are just about on; they are to keep OTHER people's animals from attacking your livestock. Sad, but true. It drives me nuts when people let their animals run loose, especially ones that aren't fixed!!
The dog chased my chickens AGAIN tonight and my husband let them know he shot the last dog that hurt our chickens. Those chickens are over six months old and about to start laying eggs and will lay for years. I will not let someone else's carelessness affect my little farm's productivity NO SIR!!!!
DeleteI wouldn't have said anything, he would be knocking on the door to see if I had seen his dog one day and I would say no.
ReplyDeleteThe last time dogs hurt the chickens my husband shot one. And the people came by and asked if we'd seen their dog and he said no. At the time we didn't know that we had every right to protect our livestock but now we do. Their dog came out from hiding and then they drove around yelling someone shot my dog. Our friend who lives by them said they thought it was my husband LOL! This girl with the boxer pup is friends with my dad, she rents a trailer from my neighbor. I asked him not to rent to people with pets in the future, the property isn't fenced either, so hopefully he will listen or I get a fence ☺

ReplyDeleteI have this same problem. Getting a fence and a pellet gun is my suggestion. I got "kicked out" of a rental once for calling animal control on my neighbor who refused to keep her aggressive dog up. Oh, she happened to be my landlord's daughter, LOL. Now that I own my house every fence will be electric and I always carry my rifle. I have called animal control twice on the neighbor's dog for chasing my chickens, I empathize completely. However, now that I have sheep ($100 a piece) there is no more Mrs. Nice Guy so to speak. After all: "Your dog in your yard is a pet, your dog in my yard is a predator."
ReplyDeleteSo true!!! I don't know why people just let their dogs run loose. They sell leashes at Walmart!
DeleteYour neighbors may have a different idea than you about how often your animals roam from your property.
ReplyDeleteGood fences make good neighbors.
My animals really dont leave. Im home all day. But I agree with you about fences!
