Puppies

I know today is a bit of a bummer for most people including myself, but I wanted to show you the puppies! Yesterday my dad's momma dog got really sick and almost died from a deficiancy caused from nursing her pups. Anyway, she had six puppies nine days ago. She can no longer nurse them because of her health so they are all on the bottle. I picked up two yesterday to take care of. They are like newborn babies up all night, super needy, but soo cute. This probally wasn't the best idea since my time is soo precious and now I have to spend it with them, but this is an experience I will cherish good or bad. I really didn't want another non productive mouth to feed but with three girls in the house we just couldn't resist such a cute puppy? Dumb or not I have them in my care and I will keep you all updated on their progress!
p.s. We are only keeping one. I just brought home another one for cuddling purposes!

  1. Puppies bring such joy. I know about the deficiancy you mention and it comes on so suddenly. Good luck bottle feeding. Yes, today is a bummer for us too BUT there must be a plan in all this.

    1. The sensible me says take them back to my dad and don't even keep one! I love animals and they all bring me tons of joy, including my chickens so what's another one right! I counted last night and I have 39 children/animals to care for on a daily, seems crazy but I wouldn't have it any other way!

  2. The puppies represent a situation that would be really, really hard to turn away from. How long do you think you'll have to bottle feed them? (You're gonna have a hard time letting that second one go after raising him/her this way! Just sayin'.) ;o}

    1. They are nine days old today so I'm guessing at least 4 more weeks! My husband and middle child think I will want to keep both little girls. The sensible me wants no more "pets" but the animal lovin' girl in me is kicking sensible me's butt!

  5. Hi Kelly--We raise King Charles Cavalier Spaniels and our oldest and first Cavalier also suffered from eclampsia(calcium deficiency). We almost lost her the first time. The last 2 litters were hard, she is now retired. Our vet told us that once they suffer eclampsia they will always be at risk. There are things you can do to help the mom. Feed things like lot of cottage cheese, give her tums daily for the calcium, make sure she has a very good diet and lots of calcium. Our dog was able to continue to nurse her pups the 2nd time it happened by giving her tums and feeding her a very high calcium diet. We just did not let her nurse them all the time like she wanted to. We had her on a nursing schedule and all was well. Hope things go ok for your puppies!

    1. Thanks for the helpful advise, I told my dad and he is going to feed her tums and cottage cheese. He really wants her to be able to nurse to relieve the pressure in her boobs. She will be fixed as soon as she is healthy, he was scared she was going to die :(

  7. It will be interesting to see if you can part with one of them, when the time comes. If you are anything like me . . . your heartstrings will be already tied. They are darling and getting them this young . . . you are going to be the only mommy they know.

    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)
